Our Philosophy

We believe in authentic assessment and student advocacy.

Each semester culminates with The Credit Board. These credit-granting panels consist of teachers and students. Every student in the school appears before the Credit Board at the end of each semester to formally apply for credit for his/her work. The Credit Board reviews the student’s self-evaluations, teachers’ evaluations, attendance and homework records, and any additional evidence of progress the student presents.

Twice a semester, leading up to Credit Boards, support and feedback are provided at Support Group Meetings.  At these meetings, the parent, student, and teacher/advisor discuss progress and set goals.  Information is provided through written evaluations by each of the student’s teachers. In this way, students become active participants in their education: self-aware, involved, and reflective.

It's difficult to fall through the cracks at Village School.

The Application Process

Every senior who plans to apply to a four-year college or university is enrolled in our fall semester class, "College Writing".

As part of this course, students meet one-on-one with a guidance counselor to refine their college lists, complete their online applications, and edit their 'Senior Narrative' essays.  The Senior Narrative is an autobiographical essay explaining the student's educational experiences in an alternative setting and is sent as part of Village School's unique college application packet. This packet includes:

  • Standardized Test Scores (if requested)

     

We realize that it is somewhat more time-consuming for admissions staff to evaluate our students, and we appreciate their effort in reviewing these materials. Since we have an ungraded credit system, we have found that self-evaluative narratives offer colleges and universities a fuller, more multi-dimensional picture of our students' academic career and college readiness.
